United confirms 2027 PQP-only qualification and a 32,000-PQP Club card cap
Four United flights still matter, and the new starter PQP deposit requires an eligible primary card account before the end of 2026.

What changed
United announced its Premier changes on October 13, 2026. Starting January 1, 2027, ordinary tier qualification will use Premier qualifying points (PQP), removing the alternative that combines lower PQP totals with Premier qualifying flights (PQF). This changes the plan for travelers who previously qualified through frequent, lower-cost flights.
The important exception is the flight minimum: members must still take at least four United or United Express flights during 2027. A credit card can contribute qualifying points, but card spending alone does not satisfy every requirement for status.

Who should care
The biggest card change is the annual spending cap for United Club and United Club Business: primary cardholders can earn up to 32,000 PQP from January 1, 2027. United also lists Explorer at up to 1,000 PQP and Quest at up to 18,000 PQP. The headline caps describe the maximum contribution, not an automatic deposit.
For starter PQP, the primary card account must be eligible and open by December 31, 2026, and remain open and not in default when fulfilled. The deposit uses Premier status held on February 1, 2027. Authorized users, trial-status members and United Debit Rewards cardholders do not qualify; United also lists exclusions for certain international cards.
United says Quest and Club annual card bonus PQP continue in addition to eligible starter PQP. The annual card bonus is awarded per card, while starter PQP is awarded per member. Chase currently lists Quest spending at 1 PQP per $20, plus 1,000 annual Card Bonus PQP under its eligibility rules. Keep those earning categories separate when projecting your total.
What to do next
Travelers approaching a tier should calculate the remaining PQP after realistic flight spending, eligible card spending and bonuses. Someone who previously relied on the PQF route may face a much larger points gap, even if the number of flights stays the same. The published 1K threshold for 2027 is 32,000 PQP; do not apply that threshold to your remaining 2026 qualification activity.
Moving spending to a United card also has an opportunity cost: compare the value of the status you would actually use with rewards forgone on another card. A cap large enough to reach a tier does not tell you whether reaching that cap is a good use of your budget.
