CSR cardholder reports unexpected hotel-credit allocation across two bookings

A cardholder says two hotel credits landed on one reservation; Chase’s public terms do not establish that the unused balance was forfeited.

TL;DR

An October 16, 2026 community post, updated October 17, reports unexpected allocation of Sapphire Reserve hotel credits across two bookings. It does not verify a permanent loss of unused credit or a new Chase policy. Check posted credits and remaining balances before considering a cancellation.

  • The complaint concerns allocation between The Edit and the separate 2026 Select Hotels credit, not a confirmed benefit cut.
  • A small posted credit does not, by itself, prove the rest of the annual allowance has disappeared.

What the cardholder reports

CategoryAmount charged to the cardReported credit outcome
First booking$253Expected The Edit credit here; says it was allocated to the other booking.
Second booking, an IHG hotel$255.21Says $250 from The Edit and $5.21 from Select Hotels were applied here.

The poster says they booked two The Edit hotels on the same day, with the second also an eligible IHG property. They intended one credit for each booking, but say both were applied to the second reservation. Two commenters describe similar problems without enough account evidence to establish the same cause.

What Chase’s terms establish

For personal Sapphire Reserve and J.P. Morgan Reserve cards, Chase’s current terms describe up to $250 per qualifying The Edit purchase, with a $500 calendar-year cap. The separate Select Hotels benefit allows up to $250 in accumulated credits on eligible purchases during 2026. Both require prepaid Chase Travel bookings of at least two nights; eligibility and available credit still matter.

Credits should normally post within three business days but can take up to four weeks. The reviewed terms do not promise allocation in booking order or say a partial Select Hotels credit forfeits the remaining allowance. That does not establish what balance this particular account currently shows.

Why canceling is not an automatic fix

In the October 17 update, the poster says rebooking had become more expensive as hotel prices and Points Boost offers changed. Chase separately confirms that Points Boost offers rotate and can vary by dates, stay length and availability. We did not verify this traveler’s quotes, remaining balances or final resolution.

This matters if you use points plus cash to target several hotel credits. A reservation confirmation, a posted statement credit and the remaining benefit balance answer different questions. An intended allocation is not proof of how Chase will process it.

What to check next

  • Save both booking confirmations, cash charges, posting dates and the credits attached to each transaction.
  • Check the remaining balance of each hotel benefit separately; ask Chase in writing how the partial credit affected it.
  • Before canceling, compare the full replacement cash-and-points price, cancellation terms and potential credit reversals. Do not assume a different booking day guarantees the desired result.
