What changed
Chase has announced the Q3 2026 rotating categories for Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Flex. Eligible cardmembers can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in activated categories from July 1 through September 30, 2026.

This is a practical update rather than a surprise product refresh. The reason it matters is timing: rotating categories do not help if you forget to activate or if you misread what counts.
The Q3 categories
The headline categories are useful for summer spending, but each one has boundaries.
- Gas stations and EV charging count when the merchant codes in the eligible category.
- Public transit includes eligible trains, buses, ferries, toll bridges, highways, parking lots, and garages, but Chase says airlines, hotels, rental cars, cruises, travel agencies, bike or scooter rentals, car sharing, taxis, limousines, Uber, and Lyft are not included.
- Select live entertainment includes many in-person ticket purchases, such as concerts, sporting events, zoos, museums, amusement parks, and similar live attractions, but not every entertainment purchase qualifies.
- United Way donations need to be made through official channels, and some local United Way transactions may not qualify because of payment processing.
What to do next
Activate before you start planning Q3 purchases. Chase allows activation through September 14, 2026, but waiting creates the risk that you forget the category exists or put spend on the wrong card.
After activation, add a tracker note for the July 1 to September 30 window and the $1,500 combined cap. If you use Freedom or Freedom Flex as part of a Chase setup, also decide which purchases should stay on this card and which should go to a travel, dining, or grocery card instead.
The most useful reminder is not only the activation date. It is the category definition. For example, public transit is not the same thing as all travel, and rideshares are specifically outside the Chase public transit definition.
