On the booking program’s site, verify the flight number, date, airports, cabin on every segment, number of seats, total miles and cash fees. Check its cancellation and change rules. Then review your issuer’s current transfer ratio, minimum, expected timing and transfer conditions. Do not assume you can reverse a transfer or that seats will remain while it processes.

A low mileage price can still leave you with high surcharges, an extra hotel night or a separate ticket to the departure airport. Compare those costs with a cash ticket and any portal option available to you. Decide using an itinerary you would buy, rather than the largest advertised points valuation.

If you need two seats, compare two seats throughout. If an award mixes business and economy, check which segment is in each cabin. Record the option you rejected and why; this prevents another search from sending you back to the same unsuitable result.
